How Product Hunt upvotes work
Product Hunt ranks products through the day. Upvotes, comments, and traffic all play a part. The first hours matter more than the last hours.
Not every upvote has the same weight. Votes from new or low-activity accounts help less than votes from people who use Product Hunt. Bought votes can hide a post.
Your goal is not a fake number. Your goal is a homepage slot that sends curious users to a page that converts. Quality of voters plus a clear product story is the path.
Start with a warm audience
Cold traffic from the homepage arrives later. Early momentum comes from people who already follow you: email, Twitter, communities, and Product Hunt followers.
Product Hunt followers are easy to miss. They followed you on Product Hunt, not always on social media. A tweet does not reach all of them. Launching Buddy sends a Twitter DM to followers who linked an X account.
Email list
Send one launch note with the hunt link. Ask for a comment if they try the product.
Product Hunt followers
DM them on Twitter with Launching Buddy as soon as the post is live.
Close supporters
Ask three to five people to leave a specific comment in the first hour.
Launch timing
A Product Hunt day starts at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time. Posts that go live early have more of the day to collect votes. Posts that go live late fight a shorter clock.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday often have more active hunters and makers. Avoid weeks with large US holidays. Pick a day when you can answer comments for 12 hours or more.
Align your DM send with the live post. Do not message people before the hunt exists. Use the launch day checklist so the order stays publish, then notify, then reply.
Comments and conversation
Comments help ranking and conversion
A thread with real questions tells later visitors the product is in use. Empty “congrats” comments add less. Ask supporters to mention a use case, a before/after, or a bug they no longer have.
Reply fast. A maker who answers in minutes looks alive. A silent thread looks abandoned. Public answers also reduce repeat questions.
A hunter intro comment can frame the product for people who do not know you. If you have no hunter, write that framing in your own first comment. The launch guide covers how to write it.
Tactics that hurt you
- Buying upvotes or using vote-exchange groups.
- Posting the same “please upvote” line in every reply.
- Launching with a broken demo or a placeholder landing page.
- Messaging people who never followed you and have no context.
- Hiding the product behind a login with no guest preview.
Stay on the honest path. Notify people who opted in. Show a working product. Answer in public. That mix earns upvotes you can keep.
