Rules for a launch DM
A launch DM is not a pitch deck. The reader already follows you on Product Hunt or knows you as a maker. Respect that.
- Lead with the launch. Do not bury the link.
- State the job the product does in one sentence.
- Ask for a look or a comment. Do not demand an upvote.
- Skip images and extra URLs. One Product Hunt link is enough.
- Keep the same text for followers. Personalize hunter and maker notes.
When the hunt is live, paste the follower template into Launching Buddy and send it. Use the hunter template days earlier.
Template for Product Hunt followers
Use this with Launching Buddy on launch day. Replace the brackets. Keep the tone you actually use in conversation.
Follower launch DM
Hey — I just launched [Product] on Product Hunt. It helps [audience] [job to be done]. Here is the hunt if you want to take a look: [Product Hunt URL] If you try it, tell me what breaks. Thank you.
Template for hunters
Send this one to two weeks before launch. One hunter per message. See the hunter outreach playbook for who to contact.
Hunter ask
Hi [Name] — I am launching [Product] on Product Hunt on [date] at 12:01 a.m. PT. It is for [audience]. The one-line pitch: [tagline]. I looked at hunts you posted in [category]. This one is in that lane. Would you hunt it? I can send a demo link and the gallery today.
Template for fellow makers
Use this for a small set of makers who launched near you or who share an audience. Do not blast it to strangers.
Maker-to-maker note
Hey [Name] — fellow maker here. I shipped [Product] and it is live on Product Hunt today. If you have two minutes, the link is [Product Hunt URL]. Happy to leave a thoughtful comment on your next hunt in return.
Need a shorter follower note? Use this version if you want less text.
Short follower DM
[Product] is live on Product Hunt: [URL] Built for [audience] who need [outcome]. Thanks for following me here — a comment or try-out helps a lot.
Lines to avoid
- “Please upvote this, it means everything.”
- “I will pay / give credits for an upvote.”
- “We are going to #1 today.”
- Three links plus a calendar invite in the first message.
- A 200-word origin story before the Product Hunt URL.
Pair a clean template with the rest of the launch checklist. The message only works if the listing and the product work too.
Copy a template, install Launching Buddy, and send it when your hunt goes live.
